DEFENCE Minister David Johnston says he will trim a bloated workforce in a bid to fix the department's budget "mess".
The new defence minister said he had "inherited a mess" and his top priority would be balancing departmental staff and funds.
"We are stabilising the ship at the moment," he told reporters in Sydney on Monday.
"At the moment it's off-balance because it's had more than $30 billion ripped out of it within the last five years."
While he stopped short of confirming job cuts would be part of the process, Mr Johnston did say public service staff numbers were too high.
"I believe 23,000 public servants is too heavy," he said.
"We are methodically and carefully going to trim that back."
Such reductions, combined with natural attrition, would ideally keep the department functioning efficiently, Mr Johnston said.
"I think we're looking for better productivity - more miles for less consumption," he said.
